Week 14: Winners and Losers
62
College Football's regular season is over. The bowl match-ups are set and the conference champions have been crowned. There will be one more "Winners and Losers" at the conclusion of the bowl games. Here are Week 14's winners and losers:
The Winners
Army and Navy
Army and Navy are both bowl-eligible and will play the final regular season game on Saturday. Regardless of the game's outcome, both are winners. The young men competing in this match-up will one day be serving the United States and standing up for freedom.
Oklahoma
For the third time in four years, the Oklahoma Sooners are Big XII Champions. Oklahoma overcame a 17-0 deficit to down Nebraska 23-20. The Sooners outgained Nebraska 454-293 while forcing four turnovers. Jimmy Stevens 27-yard-field-goal with 8:28 remaining turned out to be the game-winner as Oklahoma played stingy defense and held on for its 11th win of the year. Quarterback Landry Jones passed for 342 yards and a touchdown and rushed for another as Jones completed passes to eight different receivers. Oklahoma will play Connecticut in the Fiesta Bowl.
Miami University
After winning just one game a year ago, the Miami University Redhawks are champions of the Mid-American Conference after knocking off Northern Illinois 26-21 at Ford Field on Friday night. Every score resulted in a lead change as Miami University scored on a 33-yard-touchdown pass from quarterback Austin Boucher to Armand Robinson with 33 seconds remaining to give the Redhawks the conference title. Miami kept its hopes alive earlier in the drive by converting a 4th-and-20. Boucher's fourth-down-pass was tipped before being hauled in by receiver Chris Givens for a 31-yard-gain to keep Miami's drive alive. The Redhawks scored the game-winner two plays later. The win gives Miami University its first MAC title since 2003.
Virginia Tech
After an 0-2 start to 2010, Virginia Tech won 11 games in a row to capture its third ACC Championship in four years as the Hokies beat Florida State 44-33 in Charlotte on Saturday night. Virginia Tech converted a remarkable 13-of-18 third down conversions while holding the Seminoles to 53 yards rushing and forcing two turnovers. Quarterback Tyrod Taylor passed for 263 yards and three touchdowns while rushing for another in the victory. Virginia Tech outgained Florida State 442-341 and trailed just once in the contest. The win clinches a BCS birth for Virginia Tech as it heads to the Orange Bowl to take on Stanford.
UCF
The Golden Knights of Central Florida won its second-ever Conference USA Championship on Saturday as it hosted and beat SMU 17-7. Running back Latavius Murray scored the only two touchdowns for UCF, one receiving and the other rushing, as Central Florida notched its 10th win of the year. UCF was outgained by SMU, but won the turnover battle and found ways to convert third downs. Quarterback Jeffrey Godfrey complete 15 of his 19 pass attempts for 167 yards and the touchdown pass to Murray. The Knights took a shutout into the fourth quarter and held on for the win. UCF is 0-2 against BCS-conference teams this year, but will get one more shot as it will play Georgia in the Liberty Bowl.
Connecticut
After a 3-4 start and an 0-2 start in Big East play, the Connecticut Huskies won their last five games to win the Big East for the first time. Connecticut kicked a late field goal to knock off South Florida 19-16 on Saturday night to clinch the conference and a BCS birth. Connecticut took a 16-6 lead early in the fourth quarter on a 50-yard-field-goal by kicker Dave Teggart, but a Dontavia Bogan touchdown and a 22-yard-field-goal by Maikon Bonani for USF knotted the game at 16 with just under a minute and a half to play. With 17 seconds left, Teggart nailed a 52-yard-field-goal to give the Huskies a 19-16 lead. UCONN held on for the win and is headed to the Fiesta Bowl to battle Oklahoma.
Pittsburgh RB Dion Lewis
Dion Lewis has had a bit of a down year after being named the Big East's Offensive Player of the Year in 2009 as a freshman. Lewis returned to his 2009 form on Saturday however as Lewis carried the ball 42 times for 261 yards and all four of Pittsburgh's touchdowns in the Panthers 28-10 victory at Cincinnati. The win guarantees a winning season for Pitt and gives the Panthers a co-championship in the Big East.
Washington
After a 3-6 start, the Washington Huskies have won their final three games to become bowl-eligible for the first time since 2002. It was not pretty, but the Huskies scored in the game's final minute for the second week in a row to secure a victory. Tied at Washington State, Washington quarterback Jake Locker hit Jermaine Kearse for a 27-yard-touchdown with 44 seconds remaining to break the tie and give the Huskies a 35-28 lead they would maintain for the victory. Washington accumulated 571 yards of offense, but two turnovers and 100 yards in penalties kept the Cougars in the game. Running back Chris Polk carried the ball 29 times for 284 yards and two touchdowns for the Huskies. Washington will play Nebraska in the Holiday Bowl. The two teams met earlier this season in Seattle and the Huskies were blown out 56-21.
Nevada
Coming off of its monumental upset of Boise State, Nevada traveled to Louisiana Tech needing only to win to clinch a share of the WAC Championship. Nevada got off to a slow start, but responded with a strong second half to knock off the Bulldogs 35-17. The Wolf Pack outgained Louisiana Tech 519-292 with 360 yards coming on the ground. Quarterback Colin Kaepernick rushed for 155 yards and three touchdowns while running back Vai Taua added 162 yards and a pair of scores in the win. Nevada finishes the regular season 12-1 and share the WAC Championship with Hawaii and Boise State.
Oregon
For the first time in school history, the Oregon Ducks will have an opportunity to play for a National Championship following Saturday's 37-20 win at Oregon State. The Ducks rushed for nearly 350 yards and forced four Oregon State turnovers as they completed a perfect regular season. Running backs LaMichael James and Kenjon Barner each rushed for over 100 yards and combined for three touchdowns. Oregon State scored first, but Oregon answered with 23 straight points to take a 23-7 lead midway through the third quarter. The Beavers twice threatened to get back into the game driving inside the Oregon 10-yard-line, but on both occasions, Oregon State was held to a field goal as the Beavers moved to within 10. After a pass interference penalty kept Oregon's next possession alive, the Ducks put the game away with a 23-yard-touchdown-rush by Barner. Oregon will meet Auburn for the BCS National Championship on January 10. Should the Ducks beat Auburn, they would be the first team to win a national title with a freshman starting-quarterback since Miami won it with Bernie Kosar in 1983.
Boise State
One week after suffering an upset at the hands of Nevada, Boise State rebounded to knock off Utah State 50-14 and win a share of the WAC Championship. Quarterback Kellen Moore threw for 237 yards and three scores and rushed for another as the Broncos cruised to victory. Boise State finishes 11-1 and is WAC co-Champions with Hawaii and Nevada. The Broncos will meet Utah in the Las Vegas Bowl in a match-up between the last two Non-Automatic qualifiers to win BCS games.
The Losers
Arizona
After a 7-1 start, the Arizona Wildcats lost their final four games to finish the regular season 7-5 and below .500 in Pac-10 play. Two missed extra points did in the Wildcats in their 30-29 loss at home to arch-rival Arizona State on Thursday night. Arizona led 14-6 after three quarters, but 14 unanswered points gave the Sun Devils a 20-14 lead with just under three minutes to play in the fourth quarter. Quarterback Nick Foles found David Douglas for a five-yard-touchdown for Arizona with just 27 seconds remaining in the game. Kicker Alex Zendejas missed the extra point however and the game went into overtime tied at 20. After the teams traded field goals in the first overtime, a two-yard-run for a touchdown by Cameron Marshall gave the Sun Devils a 30-23 lead. On Arizona's possession, Douglas scored again, but this time with a 9-yard-rushing-touchdown. Zendejas' extra point attempt however was blocked and the Wildcats ended up in the loss column for the fourth consecutive week.
Temple
The Temple Owls did not play in Week 14, but when the bowl match-ups were announced, Temple was nowhere to be found. Despite finishing 8-4 and winning by two touchdowns at Connecticut, who happens to be playing in a BCS game, Temple did not receive a bowl invitation. There were only three bowls with ties to the Mid-American Conference and each will feature a team that beat Temple. However, the Sun Belt received three bowl-bids with none of the three schools having an overall record as good as the Owls'.
Northern Illinois
After not losing a single conference game all year, the Huskies of Northern Illinois suffered its first loss of 2010 to a MAC school on Friday night. In a game that went back and forth, Northern Illinois fell 26-21 to Miami University at Ford Field in the MAC Championship. Quarterback Chandler Harnish threw his third touchdown pass of the night early in the fourth quarter to give the Huskies a 21-20 lead. Northern Illinois maintained that lead for more than 14 minutes, but after converting a 4th-and-20 on its final drive, Miami University cashed in the game-winning-touchdown with just more than 30 seconds to play as Northern Illinois fell to 10-3. Harnish passed for 281 yards and three touchdowns, but received little help from his running game as the Huskies were held below three yards-per-carry. Northern Illinois will face Fresno State in the Humanitarian Bowl on December 18.
Nebraska
In its final game against a conference opponent as a member of the Big XII, Nebraska blew a 17-point-lead in 23-20 loss to Oklahoma in the Big XII Championship. Nebraska was outgained by more than 150 yards in the loss and saw an early 17-0 lead evaporate before the first half ended. After the Sooners answered Nebraska's 17-0 start with 17 points of their own, Nebraska's Alex Henery nailed a 42-yard-field-goal to give the Cornhuskers a 20-17 halftime lead. Oklahoma managed just two field goals in the second half, but shut out Nebraska in the three-point-victory. Nebraska committed four turnovers in the loss and came up just shy of its first Big XII title since 1999 and an automatic BCS bid. The Cornhuskers will have to settle for a rematch against Washington in the Holiday Bowl. Nebraska crushed Washington by 35 points in Seattle earlier this season.
Week 14's Biggest Winner
Auburn
It would be no less dramatic if Auburn quarterback Cameron Newton just received his Heisman Trophy in the mail. Against South Carolina in the SEC Championship, Newton accounted for more than 400 yards of total offense and six touchdowns in the Tigers 56-17 win on Saturday. The win clinches a spot for Auburn in the BCS National Championship for the first time and is the Tigers' first SEC Championship since 2004. Auburn never trailed in the match-up, but appeared to be wrapped up in another tight one as South Carolina scored with just 16 seconds to play in the first half to cut Auburn's lead to 21-14. But on the final play of the first half, Cam Newton fired a prayer from near midfield toward the endzone. The pass was deflected and hauled in by wide receiver Darvin Adams for a 51-yard-Auburn-touchdown that gave the Tigers a 28-14 lead at the half. The Tigers scored three touchdowns to open the second half as Auburn took a commanding 49-14 lead. Senior running back Mario Fannin capped the 39-point-win off with a rushing touchdown late in the fourth quarter. Darvin Adams finished with 217 yards receiving and two touchdowns for top-ranked Auburn. The Tigers will meet up with second-ranked Oregon for the BCS National Championship in Glendale, Arizona on January 10.
Week 14's Biggest Loser
TCU
It's hard to call an undefeated team that had a bye week and is headed to the Rose Bowl a loser, but TCU came as close as any Non-Automatic qualifier ever came to playing for the National Championship. Optimism was high last week as Auburn fell behind 24-0 and Oregon trailed at halftime, but both were able to come from behind and pull off victories. This week however, the top two teams put their games away with relatively ease and TCU was on the outside looking in. TCU will face Wisconsin in the Rose Bowl on New Year's Day with hopes of completing a perfect season.
